Following the immense success of Wonka, director Paul King has revealed that a sequel is officially in the works. The original film, which enchanted audiences and earned over $600 million worldwide, provided a fresh, whimsical take on the origins of Willy Wonka, reimagining the origin story of the beloved character from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
During an interview with HeyUGuys at the Paddington in Peru world premiere, King confirmed that the Wonka 2 script is currently being written, with “about half of a draft” completed. Speaking about the direction of the new story, the Paddington director hinted that he and his team have settled on an exciting narrative arc for Wonka’s next chapter, one that will likely take the character into international settings. “We know where we want to take him,” King shared, teasing the possibility of new settings beyond Wonka’s original chocolate factory, as they try to “get some international travel in it.”
Starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka, Wonka charmed viewers with its blend of magic, humor, and unforgettable musical numbers, winning both critical acclaim and fan appreciation. Although the film was initially met with skepticism, Chalamet’s performance alongside a star-studded ensemble—featuring names like Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, and Rowan Atkinson—was widely praised. It’s likely that several of these characters, including Hugh Grant’s unforgettable Oompa-Loompa, could make a return for Wonka 2.
With the Wonka 2 release date not yet officially announced, fans speculate that Warner Bros. may aim for a December 2027 premiere, positioning the sequel as a major holiday release. Filming for the Wonka sequel could begin as early as late 2026, allowing time for King’s creative team to fully develop Wonka’s next chapter.
