Saturday night marks both No Doubt and Olivia Rodrigo’s first-ever Coachella performances.
For the eighth song of their set, the recently reunited band led by Gwen Stefani welcomed Olivia Rodrigo to the stage as a special guest. While rocking her “I <3 ND” tank top, Rodrigo joined No Doubt for a surprise performance of the iconic 2000 single ‘Bathwater’ from the band’s forth album ‘Return of Saturn’.
Rodrigo’s admiration for No Doubt and Stefani is no secret, as she has mentioned her as a source of inspiration multiple times in the past. In Nylon‘s new Stefani cover story, Olivia praised the No Doubt’s frontwoman: “Gwen’s ability to evolve and explore different styles of music, songwriting and aesthetic while still remaining true to herself is incredibly inspiring. To me, she’s a prime example of an artist who defies stereotypes and preconceived boundaries and just makes stuff that she thinks is cool. If that’s not a true artist, I don’t know what is.”
Stefani’s music resonated with the ‘Vampire’ singer from a young age, having discovered No Doubt’s 2000 album ‘Return of Saturn’ at 15 years old, “Gwen sang about being a woman moving about this world in detail that I had never before heard put to music,” Rodrigo shared. “She unapologetically sings about things ranging from wanting to make out with someone to fantasizing about having a husband and kids. There’s so much heart in every word she says, and every song feels like it’s ripped from the diary of the coolest girl you know.”
The reunion performance with the 21-year-old phenomenon also marks No Doubt’s first performance in nearly a decade.
