Calling all millennials! This is not a drill! Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia will be returning to movie screens after 20 years! There will be a The Princess Diaries 3 and we couldn’t be happier!
Anne Hathaway blessed us with this news via Instagram on Sunday, October 2nd. Not sure if you remember the infamous quote, “Me? A princess? Shut up!” Well, she does! And she created the cutest nostalgic post that included a countdown of those hilarious “shut up” moments to make the announcement.
In the Instagram reel you see Anne in a marigold crew neck sweatshirt and black shades laying in a lawn chair. She puts up the number 1 with her finger which is followed by that “shut up” moment in the first The Princess Diaries movie. She reappears, putting the number 2 up with her fingers which is followed by Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews) saying, “shut up” in a scene from the Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement movie. Finally, she puts up the number 3 with a beautiful smile fit for a princess and says, “shut up” as “Miracles Happen” by Myra plays in the background. Anne then blows a kiss into the camera and shows a screenshot of an article written by Angelique Jackson of Variety, confirming the 3rd installment of the movie series. The caption included, “The fairy tale continues.”
Disney+, MTV, and fans alike responded with a flood of comments including, “BEST NEWS OF THE DECADE,” “SCREAMINGGGG,” and “Welcome back, Queen of Genovia!” Even celebrities like Kelly Clarkson (who sang “Breakaway” for the Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack) expressed her excitement with, “Already seated queen.” It looks like everyone is thrilled. It’s also great news that movie director, Adele Lim, who has worked on films like Raya and the Last Dragon and Crazy Rich Asians and has signed on to direct the upcoming Disney film.
Not many details have been revealed including who will return or what the plot of the sequel will be. After all, we left off with Mia being crowned Queen of Genovia and Queen Clarisse marrying the beloved and loyal Joe in the last movie. We also know that Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine) confessed his love to her. In the next movie will she be married? Will she have little princes and princesses? What has Queen Mia been up to for the past 20 years? Julie Andrews did allude to not being involved in any possible sequels to Vanity Fair in 2022 stating, I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible.” We can all cross our fingers that she changes her mind. Only time will tell.
Although we have only received confirmation that the movie is in the works and fans have varying ideas of where the plot should go, we can all agree on 1 thing. This news and thoughtful post by Anne Hathaway, the princess herself, has millennials saying, “miracles happen, once in a while, when you believe.”
